The Rhone Valley is divided into two parts, North and South. This is due to both a variance in climate and to a certain extent, the grape varieties grown. The Northern Rhone only produces 5% of the total production of the valley. It is the home of Hermitage, Cote Rotie and Condrieu. The South is where the wines of Chateauneuf du Pape are produced as well as the Cotes du Rhone. The principal varieties are Syrah and Viognier to the North, while Grenache, Mourvèdre and Roussanne dominate the South.
